Ethics in the Worplace Essay - 1111 Words

As individuals we have personal values and beliefs that are a part of who we are as a person. Some of these values and beliefs are things that are learned from our parents, grandparents and other individuals that influence our lives. We also acquire values from some of things that we have experienced in life. As we navigate our way through the workplace, we encounter situations that may challenge our values and beliefs. When these incidents occur we need to ensure that the right decisions are being made. Ethics in the workplace is a responsibility of everyone who is a part of the organization. At my previous job, the code of ethics is communicated in a number of ways. Ethics information is posted on the company’s intranet. The information is also posted on b ulletin boards throughout the organization. Department leaders are expected to meet with their staff periodically and to discuss the code of ethics. Because the organization is a government entity, employees are held to a high ethical standard. Employees are constantly reminded that it is our job to serve the public. This responsibility of being public servants means that we are constantly being scrutinized by the individuals that we serve. As employees who at all times are representing the organization, employees are always expected to make sound, ethical decisions. These decisions should be based on the values, beliefs and expectations that have been established. Employees at my previous job are expected to complete various types of training which includes ethics training. All new hires are required to attend the New Employee Orientation Program. Values of the organization are discussed during this training. I remember attending the training in September 2004 and being i mpressed with the fact that they highly value the concept of doing the right thing. The company also offered supervisory training where ethics training is reinforced. Lack of moral conscience and irresponsible behavior can be attributed to not being working in a timely fashion.
